Mahjong Soul

Server Setup and Community Management (April 2019 - Present)

Background: Mahjong Soul is an riichi mahjong client published by Yostar games. Featuring a cast of colorful anime characters, you are able to play mahjong against both computer opponents and real players, climbing the ranks and showing off your skills. The purpose of the Discord server is to facilitate the players' ability to learn about mahjong, talk about the characters, and find other members to play with.

Contributions:

• Organizing a fully bilingual server with mirrored channels and roles in both Japanese and English. 

• Setting up an on-demand voice channel system to facilitate streaming and playing the game together while giving users control over their respective voice channels.

• Creating and enforcing rules for a notification role to find other players to play with

Results

• +10 percentage point increase in new member retention after switching from a Discord bot language role system to Discord's native Onboarding feature

• Zero voice channel-related moderation reports

• 400+ looking for game pings in one month with zero complaints about over-pinging

Candy AI

Community Management (December 2024 - Present)

Background: Candy AI is AI companion app where users can chat with a variety of AI characters and generate related images and videos. The Discord server is primarily used to facilitate information sharing among community members, share user generated content, collect feedback and bug reports, and disseminate updates to the community.

Contributions:

• Developing and executing a first month server revamp plan to implement Discord best practices

• Creating a new system for collating and quantifying user feedback and bug reports to present in a weekly report

• Coordinating directly with product managers to answer user inquiries and ensure our community beta tester group was properly utilized

Results

• Improved community sentiment (i.e., messages from before these contributions were negative towards the team and messages from the same people after these contributions were positive)

• 50% increase in community feedback frequency over 3 months

Soulbound

Community Management (April 2023 - Present)

Background: Based on an NFT project originally known as Worldwide Webb, Soulbound is a web-based pixel MMO that you can play directly on Discord. The Discord server is the primary point of communication for game updates, providing feedback and bug reports, and learning more about the game. Discord server members consist of two types of stakeholders: NFT Holders that own one or more of the related NFTs from before the project became known as soulbound, and non-holders that are primarily familiar with the game as a Discord activity.

Contributions:

• Implementing robust automoderation to proactively stop scammers and spam accounts from disrupting the community

• Creating actionable tasks for team members in Linear related to user bug reports and community feedback

• Adapting the Discord server for the game's rebrand from the browser-based Worldwide Webb to the Discord-based Soulbound game

Results

• 80 solved bug reports created by me based on community input

• Approximately 30 scam/spam messages stopped per month solely through automoderation

Discord Audit and Implementation (March 2025)

Background: Papa_Yokai is a horror game streamer with a Discord server that he uses as a home for his community. Because his server was set up by a third party, he was struggling to make further modifications and adjustments to it. He approached me to audit his Discord server, offering suggestions for improvements in server structure, bot usage, and moderation practices while requesting documentation to make further changes himself.

Contributions:

• Categorized, prioritized, and implemented a list of recommendations for improving the Discord server

• Updated the server bot stack to remove redundant bots and replace MEE6 with Sapphire and Lurkr

• Provided documentation for further changes, allowing the client to be self sufficient

Results

• Increased ease of use for client and server members

• Reduced spam DM messages to zero

Background: Tejidotcom is a content creation group making videos about music and anime. With an active Patreon of almost 2,000 members and a Youtube channel of more than 50k, they wanted to bring their community to the next level by creating a Discord server for their members.

Contributions:

• Adapted client requirements to Discord best practices and limitations

• Provided live demonstrations of key Discord features for their community including stage channels

• Reviewed documentation to ensure they could handle future setup of sensitive tasks such as Patreon integration
